Password Security Tips

As data breaches become more common we’d like to take a moment to remind our customers about the importance of password security. Your passwords are a first line of defense against criminals seeking your valuable data on the internet. Below are some password tips that can help you keep your online accounts safe.

  • Use strong and unique passphrases for critical accounts like work accounts, email, social media, and online banking. Strive to make them easy to remember but hard to guess.
  • Enable Multi-Factor authentication whenever possible on critical accounts.
  • Make use of a password manager for your personal accounts. This allows you to only have to remember one strong master password and the password manager takes care of all your other sites.
  • Do not use the same password on all your accounts. Sites get hacked frequently resulting in your information and credentials being available to criminals all over the world. If you reuse your password and an account gets compromised, all other accounts using those credentials are now at risk.
  • Avoid using your email address as your username, if possible.  Email addresses are the most common username and are often found in data breaches.
  • Your email account is often used to reset passwords for other online accounts. Make sure you keep these credentials unique, strong, and secure.
  • Do not share your passwords with others.
